Jonathon Rhone, Chair
Jonathan is a serial cleantech entrepreneur committed to BC leadership as a global centre of cleantech innovation. In his current role as CEO of Axine Water Technologies, he’s helping to revolutionize industrial wastewater treatment. He’s co-founder and director of Evok Innovations, a $100 million cleantech venture fund with a mission to transform the energy value chain. He’s also founder and former CEO of Nexterra Systems a global supplier of waste-to-energy systems. Prior to Nexterra he held leadership positions with a NASDAQ listed cleantech company and the Delphi Group and international consultancy.
Andrew Morden, Treasurer
With over 20 years of operations, corporate finance and M&A experience, Andrew is a seasoned executive and leader, and is current CEO of Corvus Energy. Andrew has spent 15 years working at the executive management level where he has focused on strategic planning, operations, M&A, corporate finance and raising venture, private equity and public market financing.
Andrew has held senior management positions in large, medium and startup companies and has a proven track record as a strategic leader including planning, implementing and leading M&A, operational best practice, restructuring, rapid growth, and change management initiatives.
Marty Reed, Secretary
A longtime Silicon Valley executive and investor, Marty Reed moved to Vancouver in 2015 to launch Evok Innovations, a cleantech fund that is a unique partnership between the BC Cleantech CEO Alliance, Cenovus Energy and Suncor Energy. He serves on the board for one of Evok’s portfolio companies, DarkVision Technologies Inc., who have developed a super high resolution ultrasound-based imaging technology that gives oil and gas operators a set of eyes inside their wells that are unimpaired by wellbore fluids.
Prior to Evok, Marty was a Partner with The Roda Group, a San Francisco Bay Area based, early-stage venture capital firm focused on clean technology. In that capacity, Marty lead investments and served on the board of directors for mOasis, Inventys, Gridtential and Axine.
Janice is currently the CEO with Neurio and is an entrepreneurial executive whose vision, commitment, and passion have been the driving force behind the company since its inception. Before launching Neurio, she demonstrated leadership and visionary success with the marketing group of CTV, Canada's most watched television station. Janice holds a Bachelor of Commerce with a specialization in Marketing from the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia.
As President & Chief Executive Officer, Jeff is responsible for the strategic and overall leadership of MineSense. His primary mandate is to bring to market the company’s disruptive, value creating technology. In 2016, this included a successful fund raise and the company’s first commercial contract.
Jeff is a seasoned CEO with a particular focus on intensive growth mandates. His experience spans a diverse set of industries, including environmental services, electronics recycling, telecommunications, robotics and engineered materials.
Benjamin Sparrow is the CEO and co-founder of Saltworks Technologies. He holds an MBA in Technology Management from Simon Fraser University and is a Registered Professional Engineer in mechanical engineering with expertise in thermodynamics and process integration. Prior to Saltworks, he managed a $500M projects portfolio in the power generation industry. In 2012, Ben was honoured with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal for his contribution to Canada’s cleantech sector and was identified as one of Vancouver’s Top 40 under 40.
Wal van Lierop
Wal is an energy technology veteran with unique industry insight gained through deep operational experience as a venture capitalist, corporate executive, top international consultant and university professor. Since co-founding Chrysalix in 2001, Wal has sourced, invested in and advised numerous startups building innovative solutions for the new world economy – often while working hand-in-hand with large multinational companies on their innovation strategies. Wal is a specialist in maximizing returns from bringing innovative solutions to large industries that are in transition.
Founder and Chair Emeritus
Mossadiq S. Umedaly has over 30 years of experience in growing institutions and cleantech businesses as well as being an advisor to governments, universities and NGOs on matters related to energy, the
environment and education. At present, as the Principal of his consulting firm, Business Strategy
Associates, Mossadiq provides strategic advice on business and financial strategy as well as mentorship to growth companies. Mossadiq founded the British Columbia Cleantech CEO Alliance in 2005, with a view to help build the cleantech industry in BC.
From 2009 to 2013 he was the Executive Chairman of Enecsys Ltd., and during this time, Umedaly was also a Venture Partner of Wellington Partners, a leading pan-European Venture Capital Fund
focused on cleantech and digital media. Prior to this, from 2007 to 2009, he was the Chairman of BC Hydro and Executive Chairman of Powertech Labs, BC Hydro’s clean energy technology subsidiary.
Mossadiq's previous roles included Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Xantrex Technology Inc., Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of fuel cell pioneer Ballard Power Systems and senior positions with the Aga Khan Development Network.
Jessica McIlroy, Executive Director
Jessica McIlroy is a sustainable energy strategist passionate about driving change to realize social and climate justice. With fifteen years of experience in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sectors, she is continually looking for and creating opportunities to change policy, behaviour and industry practices.
Ms. McIlroy's previous experience includes Founder and Executive Director of the BC Women in Energy Network, Executive Director of the BC Greens, founding Board Member and Pacific Director with Marine Renewables Canada, and management positions with Canadian Passive House Institute West, and Cool North Shore.
A continual thirst for learning has led Jessica to complete a BSc in Environmental Science, an MSc in Environmental Sustainability, an MBA in Executive Management, a Certificate in Climate Change Decision Making, and the THNK Creative Leadership Program.
